This term the subject focuses on the study and analysis of non-African poetry, exploring themes, poetic devices, and the backgrounds of renowned poets. It begins with “Binsey Poplars” by Gerard Manley Hopkins, where students will examine its themes and poetic techniques, such as imagery, sound patterns, and environmental concerns. The course then moves to “The Journey of the Magi” by T.S. Eliot, with a detailed reading and content analysis, followed by an exploration of its themes and poetic devices, including symbolism and religious undertones.
Next, students will analyze “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou, studying its content, themes, language, and style, focusing on its depiction of freedom and oppression. The final weeks will be dedicated to understanding the backgrounds of the poets, providing insight into their influences, historical contexts, and literary contributions. This course aims to deepen students’ appreciation of poetry while enhancing their analytical and interpretative skills.
