About Course

ABOUT THIS COURSE: This course focuses on the analysis of both African and non-African drama, examining key elements such as plot, characterization, themes, language, and style.

Students will begin with a detailed study of Wole Soyinka’s The Lion and the Jewel, analyzing its plot, characters, and themes to understand the cultural and social issues portrayed in the play. They will explore how characterization contributes to the development of the story and examine the playwright’s use of language and dramatic techniques.

The second half of the course shifts focus to August Wilson’s Fences, a non-African play. Students will analyze its plot, characters, themes, and stylistic elements, comparing its storytelling techniques with those in The Lion and the Jewel.

By the end of the course, students will have developed a strong understanding of dramatic literature, enhancing their ability to critically evaluate plays from different cultural perspectives.
