About Course
This subject explores the historical and political evolution of governance in Nigeria and Africa. It begins with an in-depth study of pre-colonial administration, examining the traditional political systems of major ethnic groups, such as the centralized governance of the Hausa-Fulani, the Yoruba monarchical system, and the Igbo acephalous (decentralized) structure. Students will then analyze colonial administration, focusing on the methods used by European powers to govern Nigeria and the impact of their policies on local societies.
The course further delves into colonialism in Africa, discussing the motives, processes, and consequences of European domination across the continent. Finally, students will explore the indirect rule system, a colonial strategy used by the British, where traditional rulers were incorporated into governance. This topic will highlight its successes, failures, and effects on Nigeria’s political development. The course provides a foundation for understanding Nigeria’s historical governance and its influence on modern political structures.
