About Course
This term’s curriculum focuses on deepening students’ understanding of elections and democracy in Nigeria. It begins by introducing the concept of elections and why they are essential in a democratic society, emphasizing how they give citizens the power to choose leaders and influence governance. Students also study the roles of Nigeria’s electoral bodies, such as INEC, and what defines a free and fair election — including transparency, fairness, and equal opportunity.
Midway through the term, the focus shifts to electoral malpractices, examining the problems that undermine Nigeria’s elections, such as vote-buying, rigging, and violence. Students are encouraged to explore solutions and preventive measures, learning how legal frameworks, civic education, and institutional reforms can help. The final weeks wrap up by looking at the broader democratic process, helping students understand how elections fit into the larger system of citizen participation, rights, and responsibilities in sustaining a healthy democracy.
